Users will need to request VPN access via TeamDynamix before they will be able to connect to the VPN. You will need to provide the UAFS tag number of your desktop.
To access your UAFS desktop it must be powered on. On your Windows desktop you can either log out or lock Windows (Windows key + L) to keep your computer powered on when you are done working on-campus. On your MAC desktop you can either log out or lock your MAC (click Apple icon top left corner and select Lock or Logout).
To connect you will need the name of your desktop.
- In most cases, the computer name will be UAFSXXXXX, where XXXXX is the UAFS tag number of your desktop.
- Example: uafs44757.ad.uafortsmith.edu
- If you are a remote-only user, you will likely have a virtual machine assigned to you.The naming format of our virtual workstations follows the convention of first initial, full last name, followed by the suffix “-VM”, e.g., “JSmith-VM” for someone named John Smith.
Multifactor authentication (MFA) will be required for all users connecting to the Palo Alto GlobalProtect VPN client.

GlobalProtect for Windows
Palo Alto GlobalProtect v6.0 is currently supported on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- In order to establish a VPN connection to campus, copy the following URL into your web browser exactly as shown: https://remote.uafs.edu
- If you get an error when browsing to this site, please make sure that you entered https instead of http.
- You will see the login screen. Use your UAFS credentials to sign into the GlobalProtect Portal.
- Download the client that you need for your version of Windows. In most cases, you will use the 64-bit client.
- Once the download is complete, run the installer. Keep all default options and click Next to continue through the installer. Click Close when done.
- The GlobalProtect client should automatically start at the end of the installation. If it does not automatically start, then you can start the GlobalProtect client from the Windows Start Menu.
- The Global Protect Icon should appear in the system tray located in the lower right by the clock.

- Once the application starts, enter remote.uafs.edu and click Connect.
- Enter your University credentials when prompted and click Sign in.
- You should see Connected in the GlobalProtect window.
- You can now use Remote Desktop to connect to your UAFS computer to access your desktop or network shared drives.
Remote Desktop for Windows
- In the search box on the taskbar, type Remote Desktop Connection, and then select Remote Desktop Connection. In Remote Desktop Connection, type the name of the PC you want to connect to and then select Connect.
- In most cases, the computer name will be UAFSXXXXX, where XXXXX is the UAFS tag number of your PC.
- Example: uafs44757.ad.uafortsmith.edu
- If you are a remote-only user, you will likely have a virtual machine assigned to you.The naming format of our virtual workstations follows the convention of first initial, full last name, followed by the suffix “-VM”, e.g., “JSmith-VM” for someone named John Smith.
- Your username will be UAFS\username.
- Your password will be the same as if you were logging in on campus.
You can now disconnect and reconnect the VPN by right clicking the taskbar icon and selecting Disconnect.
Each time you want to connect to your UAFS computer, you will need to start the Global Protect client (Step 5 – 10), login to Global Protect then connect to your PC.
GlobalProtect for MAC
- In order to establish a VPN connection to campus, copy the following URL into your web browser exactly as shown: https://remote.uafs.edu
- If you get an error when browsing to this site, please make sure that you entered https instead of http.
- You will see the login screen. Use your campus credentials to login To the GlobalProtect Portal.
- Download the Mac 32/64 bit agent. You may be prompted to Keep or Discard. Select Keep to download the installer.
- Once the download is complete, run the installer. Keep all default options and click through the installer prompts. Click Close when done.
- If you receive a “System Extension Blocked” screen click Open Security Preferences
- If not click on the apple in the top left corner and click on System Preferences and click Security & Privacy. Then click Allow beside System Software from developer “Palo Alto Networks” was blocked from loading.
- Reboot your computer following these steps.
- The GlobalProtect client may automatically start at the end of the installation. If it does not automatically start, then you can open the GlobalProtect Panel by right clicking the blue globe icon at the top right of your screen and select Show Panel.
- Once the application starts, enter remote.uafs.edu in the Portal box and click Connect.
- Enter your campus credentials when prompted and click Connect.
- If this is the first time you are using the VPN you will need to follow the instructions below for Setting Up Microsoft Remote Desktop for MAC OS. If you have already set this up continue with the next step.
- Double click on the PC you added.
- You will likely get a message You are connecting to the RDP host “uafs44757.ad.uafortsmith.edu”….. Click Continue.
- You can now disconnect and reconnect the VPN by right clicking the taskbar icon and selecting the appropriate option.
Remote Desktop for MAC
- Open the App Store app
- Search for Microsoft Remote Desktop
- Click on Get to install.This will require an App Apple ID. Follow the on-screen prompts.
- Open Finder --> Applications --> Microsoft Remote Desktop
- Click Add PC
- Fill in the “PC name” field with uafs(your computer tag number).ad.uafortsmith.edu
- Example: uafs44757.ad.uafortsmith.edu
- Click the drop-down menu for User account and select Add User Account.
- Under Username enter UAFS\(your username)
- Under Password enter your UAFS password
- Under Friendly name enter whatever name you would like for the computer you are connecting to.
- Then click Add.
