Mobile Application Management FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Intune?

Microsoft Intune is a cloud-based service that protects the University’s data by using mobile device management (MDM) and mobile application management (MAM). UAFS uses MAM to protect University data on users' personal devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

What is Mobile Application Management?

Intune mobile application management (MAM) refers to the suite of Intune management features that lets organizations publish, push, configure, secure, monitor, and update mobile apps for your users.
MAM allows UAFS to manage and protect the University’s data within an application on personal devices rather than using MDM which would require more intrusive controls.

Does Mobile Application Management apply to student accounts?

Yes, all UAFS enterprise Microsoft accounts are subject to MAM policies. Google accounts are outside the scope of MAM and are not affected.

What is required for my mobile device to be considered compliant?

1. Have device encryption enabled
2. Require a passcode/PIN to unlock the device
3. Not be jailbroken, rooted, or use any other method of gaining system-level control
4. (Android only) Download the Intune Company Portal app

What personal information can the University see on my device?

The University can only see device specific attributes. For example: device manufacturer and model, operating system version, IMEI, and serial number. The University cannot see private information such as call logs, browser history, text messages, passwords, or pictures.

Why is Mobile Application Management being required on my personal device?

Establishing and enforcing a mobile application management policy is required for the University to align with UA System security and auditing mandates.

What if I do not want Mobile Application Management policies on my mobile device?

Without these policies applied, the mobile device will no longer be permitted to access University data, including Microsoft Office, Outlook, and OneDrive.
