How to enable Cached Exchange Mode in Outlook

Microsoft recommends using Cached Exchange Mode to help with Office 365 performance issues. This document lists some common issues and provides step-by-step instructions on how to enable this feature for Microsoft Outlook.

Common issues

If you are experiencing the following symptoms while using Outlook, enabling Cached Exchange Mode may help.

  • Outlook not responding or freezing up
  • Slow performance while navigating between emails, folders, and other outlook items
  • Online Archive not appearing in Outlook
  • Outlook notes incomplete, or other items missing

 

Enable Cached Exchange Mode

  1. In Outlook, click File
  2. Expand Account Settings
    • Select Account Settings
  3. In the Account Settings window, double-click your email account to open server settings
  4. On the Server Settings window, check the box to Use Cached Exchange Mode
    • NOTE: If Use Cached Exchange Mode is already enabled, uncheck the box to disable it and restart Outlook. Start over from step 1
  5. Drag the slider to 1 year
  6. Click Next to Continue
  7. Click OK at the notification to restart Outlook 
  8. Click Finish
  9. Close and restart Microsoft Outlook

Your emails may take several minutes to appear in Outlook. There is a progress indicator located at the very bottom of Outlook. This indicator will show “All folders are up to date” once complete.
